“As a manifestation of the human spirit, music performs a function which is noble, unique, and irreplaceable. When it is truly beautiful and inspired, it speaks to us more than all the other arts of goodness, virtue, peace, of matters holy and divine. For good reason it has always been, and it will always be, an essential part of the liturgy”
Music plays an integral part within the Catholic Liturgy. At St. Patrick’s Church of Merna, our dedicated, hard-working, singers and instrumentalists strive for excellence while also seeking to bring our congregation to a closer union with God.
Listed below are various opportunities to share your talents and become involved within the St. Patrick’s community. If you have additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact our music director, Rachel Pinto at email@example.com or leave a message at the parish office.
Open to individuals high school age and older, our parish choir runs from September through Pentecost. The choir sings at the 9 AM Mass every other Sunday during ordinary time, every Sunday during Advent and Lent, all Masses during Holy week, as well as a Christmas Mass. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday evening in the music room from 7-9 PM.
The Contemporary Ensemble seeks to offer a more “praise and worship” style of music using classic church hymns, all in the context of the sacred liturgy handed down by the Church. This ensemble runs year-round providing music at our 11 AM Mass as well as a Christmas and Easter Mass. Accompanied primarily by piano and guitar, this group welcomes any high school age or older vocalist or instrumentalist. Rehearsals are every Sunday before Mass at 10 AM in the music room.
Cantors play an essential role leading our congregation in song at all parish liturgies, weddings, and funerals. Responsibilities include announcing hymnal numbers, singing the responsorial psalm, and leading gospel acclamations. We welcome High School Juniors & Seniors (Living the Faith Hours accepted) and adult vocalists of any range. New Cantor training is held the first Saturday of every month at 9 AM. Regular cantor rehearsals vary based upon individual schedules. If you are interested, please set up a meeting with our music director, Rachel Pinto.
Open to all parishioners 8th grade and older with at least three years of experience and training on their instrument. We welcome strings, woodwinds, and select brass. Instrumentalists will provide music as needed for certain preludes, liturgies, Christmas, and Easter Masses.
Pianists and organists are the backbone of our music ministries providing our cantors, singers, and congregation a solid music foundation. We are looking to build a group of musicians who would be willing to play in rotation at all Masses at St. Mary’s Church in Downs. Individuals must have at least five years of training/experience on their instrument to be considered. Please contact Rachel Pinto at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a message at the parish office.
